The backpacking sketchbook

I recently went on a backpacking holiday, travelling through Laos and Thailand and had a great time documenting my journey in my sketchbook as I went along. If this was a full time 'job' i would be the happiest person in the world! Took the plunge!

Tim Linden from Start Xchange placed a post in his blog that was really intriguing. One click and I was taken to a site Lulu.com that shows you how you can begin to self-publish paper backs, hard cover, photo books and calendars.

He indicated that he was going to create a photo book featuring his photography. To get to that goal he created a calendar using his photos and will be gaining revenue from the sales on the site. Very clever and a good use of his creativity. That Tim is… Continue

Word shortcuts

I'm sure there are any number of editors who, like me, like to do a lot of things via the keyboard rather than the mouse. I find these probably less-known keyboard shortcuts to be invaluable during editing (and I have created quite a few custom shortcuts as well which you can do by going to Tools->Customize and clicking the Keyboard... button) so I thought I would share them.

Ctrl-Shift-E : turn Track Changes on/off

Ctrl-Shift-Space : insert non-breaking space (very useful… Continue

Jalapeno Moon - More tales from the Shaman's Record

I'm glad to say the sequel to Zebra Crossings, Tales from the Shaman's Record, is nearly complete. I've called it (for now) Jalapeno Moon, More tales from the Shaman's Record.

In the first book the eclectic sangoma Malibongwe Ngingingini, and his apprentice Anna Persens, travel round the Cape and then to Egypt and England. In this one they travel round the Cape and then go on to the USA.

This sequel is also written like a sequence of episodes, but with a lot… Continue

a moody little exchange

Since the LRB itself is happy to point out the error of its ways here, I feel I am not transgressing any of the Club's rules.

Glass Houses

From Timothy Barnard

The LRB and its authors continue to have problems grasping the use of the subjunctive tense in English. Henry Siegman (LRB, 29 January) writes: ‘Even so, it offered to extend the truce, but only on condition that Israel ended its blockade.’ Does one have to be of a certain age… Continue
